On June 8 and 9, 48 researchers met for the first European Workshop on Algorithmic Fairness (EWAF’22) at the premises of the Digital Society Initiative. This research field revolves around the question of how fairness can be understood and evaluated in the age of algorithms. As such research often focuses on the US, the workshop was an attempt to bring the European research community together and discuss issues that are more relevant in the European context. Many researchers came to discuss their current work and connect with researchers working on similar topics. The topics discussed ranged from philosophical accounts of fairness to concrete cases of (un)fairness, such as in Italian car insurances.
