Data donation to research

The first Data Donation Days will take place on September 21 and 28, 2024. The aim of this campaign is to make people aware that their user data does not just have to go to platforms such as Google, YouTube or Instagram. Instead, it can be donated to socially important research projects to support research and create added value.

The good thing about donating data is that you don't lose anything, but on the contrary, you gain something: more knowledge about your social media use. (Image: zVg)

The research projects create new knowledge for you and society from the donated data.

How does data donation work?

If you decide to donate data, the data can be uploaded anonymously to the Data Donation Lab’s infrastructure for specific research projects.

The technology for data donation was developed at the University of Zurich and the data is stored on a server at the University of Zurich. Prof. Dr. Thomas Friemel and Nico Pfiffner want to raise awareness of the fact that personal user data does not just have to remain with tech companies. On the platform they have developed, data from social media accounts such as Google or YouTube can be voluntarily donated to research teams. The focus is on data protection and anonymity.
