SRF Live Chat: Media consumption and cell phone use among children

Barbara Getto, Professor of Media Education, Center for Education and Digital Transformation PHZH, together with other experts, answered questions on media consumption and cell phone use among children, the behavior of parents and the role of schools in the SRF Live Chat on 26.02.25. Topics included strategies for preventing cyberbullying, sensible rules for smartphone use and the right way to deal with problematic content online.

The following questions were asked, for example:

  • More screen time – really
  • At what age does social media make sense?
  • Should children’s photos be online?
  • Do children need clear rules for digital media – or does it regulate itself?
  • How can smartphones be used sensibly in educational contexts?
But if we ban cell phones from schools, we will find ourselves in a field of tension: smartphones are an integral part of young people's lives and schools have the opportunity to prepare them for a digitalized society
