DIZH Apéro for the international workshop “Writing Technology”

Researchers from the USA and Europe met at the ZHAW in early December for an exchange on the digitization of writing. The meeting was hosted by DIZH Fellow Christian Rapp from the Center for Innovative Didactics at the School of Management and Law. The SNSF-funded meeting was prompted by a book project on digital writing technologies, the results of which were exchanged and discussed.

Explaining and understanding artificial intelligence made easy

What is “artificial” and “intelligent” about technology? For people outside this field, it is often difficult to understand how artificial intelligence works. ZHAW researchers are developing methods to help here.

The technology that lies behind artificial intelligence (AI) can seem invisible and sometimes even scary to many. People often do not realise that applications are underpinned by an AI system. This is the case, for example, when AI makes recommendations based on our previous decisions when we are browsing Netflix or shopping online. Manuel Holler from the ZHAW School of Management and Law refers to this as an “AI moment,” in other words an everyday situation in which the effect of AI is surprisingly felt.

Automated Decision-Making Systems in the Public Sector: An Impact Assessment Tool for Public Authorities

AlgorithmWatch Switzerland and AlgorithmWatch have published the new paper “Automated Decision-Making Systems in the Public Sector: An Impact Assessment Tool for Public Authorities”. The publication was written by DSI team member Michele Loi in collaboration with Anna Mätzener, Angela Müller, and Matthias Spielkamp.

With the tool, the authors aim to contribute to the discussion around impact assessment of ADM systems by providing a concrete proposal on how ethical principles can be operationalized in the context of such an assessment. The checklists they have developed for this purpose are directly applicable as a tool for public authorities.
